Jumolhari Trek


The Jumolhari Trek in Bhutan is a 7 to 9-day adventure through stunning Himalayan landscapes. Trekkers encounter breathtaking views of Mount Jumolhari, pristine forests, alpine lakes, and remote villages. With moderate difficulty, the trek offers opportunities for wildlife sightings and visits to ancient monasteries. Best enjoyed in spring or autumn, it’s an unforgettable journey for nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers.

Itinerary

Day 1: Paro to Shana (Start of Trek)

  • Drive from Paro to Shana, the starting point of the trek (Approximately 2 hours).
  • Begin the trek from Shana and follow the Paro Chhu (river) upstream.
  • Pass through beautiful forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron.
  • Camp overnight at Shana.

Day 2: Shana to Thangthangkha

  • Trek from Shana to Thangthangkha.
  • Continue following the Paro Chhu through lush forests and meadows.
  • Enjoy panoramic views of Mount Jumolhari and other peaks.
  • Camp overnight at Thangthangkha.

Day 3: Thangthangkha to Jangothang

  • Trek from Thangthangkha to Jangothang, also known as “Jomolhari Base Camp.”
  • Hike through alpine meadows and yak herder camps.
  • Enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Jumolhari and its neighboring peaks.
  • Camp overnight at Jangothang.

Day 4: Exploration Day at Jangothang

  • Spend the day acclimatizing and exploring the stunning surroundings of Jangothang.
  • Optional hike to Tshophu Lake or the base of Mount Jumolhari for spectacular views.
  • Relax and enjoy the tranquility of the high Himalayas.
  • Camp overnight at Jangothang.

Day 5: Jangothang to Lingshi

  • Trek from Jangothang to Lingshi, crossing the Nyile La Pass (4,890 meters).
  • Descend into the Lingshi Valley, passing by small villages and ancient dzongs (fortresses).
  • Enjoy panoramic views of Mount Jumolhari and Mount Tserim Gang.
  • Camp overnight at Lingshi.

Day 6: Lingshi to Shodu

  • Trek from Lingshi to Shodu, crossing the Yelila Pass (4,930 meters).
  • Descend through rhododendron forests and alpine meadows.
  • Pass by the picturesque villages of Chebisa and Lingshi.
  • Camp overnight at Shodu, beside the Thimphu Chhu (river).

Day 7: Shodu to Barshong

  • Trek from Shodu to Barshong, passing through dense forests and lush valleys.
  • Follow the Thimphu Chhu downstream, crossing several streams and waterfalls.
  • Camp overnight at Barshong, surrounded by pristine wilderness.

Day 8: Barshong to Dolam Kencho

  • Trek from Barshong to Dolam Kencho, crossing the Dolam Kencho Pass (3,580 meters).
  • Descend through dense forests of bamboo, oak, and rhododendron.
  • Camp overnight at Dolam Kencho.

Day 9: Dolam Kencho to Dodena (End of Trek) – Drive to Thimphu

  • Trek from Dolam Kencho to Dodena, the endpoint of the trek.
  • Meet your transport and drive to Thimphu (Approximately 1 hour).
  • Explore Thimphu’s cultural attractions and markets.
  • Overnight stay in Thimphu.

Day 10: Departure

  • Transfer to Paro International Airport for departure.

This itinerary provides a comprehensive experience of the Jumolhari Trek, allowing trekkers to immerse themselves in the stunning beauty of the Bhutanese Himalayas and experience the unique culture of the region.
